Mandriva Linux (previously: Mandrake Linux) – an independent Linux distribution, originally forked from Red Hat Linux.

The system features the most popular desktop environments, a set of pre-installed application for daily usage, and integrated its own graphical configuration utilities tool ‘Mandriva Control Center’.

Mandriva Linux uses ‘urpmi’ package manager, which allows installation of packages by automatically installing all the needed dependencies, from various media, including network/Internet, CD/DVD and local disk. Urpmi has a graphical front-end called ‘pmdrake’, which is integrated into the Mandriva Control Center.
The RPM package management system is also available in the system to perform operation on the packages.

Mandriva Linux was started in 1998 under the name of Mandrake Linux.
The first release was based on Red Hat Linux 5.1, used the K Desktop Environment 1, and was released in July 1998.
In February 2005, MandrakeSoft merged with Brazil’s company called Conectiva to the new Mandriva S.A. In May 2015 Mandriva SA has been closed.

The last stable version of Mandriva Linux 2011 was released in August 2011.

Derivatives:
Most Mandriva Linux developers went to Mandriva fork called Mageia.
ROSA is a fork of Mandriva created by former Mandriva developers too.
OpenMandriva Lx has been built on the top of ROSA as its fork.
PCLinuxOS initially derived from Mandrake.
Unity Linux (discontinued) is a Mandriva based distribution.

KateOS – an independent Linux distribution, originally based on Slackware.

The first version of Kate Linux 1.0 ‘Rabbit’ was released in October 09, 2004.
Kate Linux 2.0 ‘Zyklon’ released in April 09, 2005.
KateOS 3.0 ‘Virgin’ released in July 09, 2006.

Started from version 3.0, KateOS package manager uses TGZex (.tgz) packages, which unlike Slackware packages support dependency tracking (optional), internationalized descriptions, and was designed for ease of update. KateOS uses its own, native package manager tools: PKG and Updateos. Updateos is similar in work to Debian’s ‘apt-get’, and due to cooperate with PKG could install TGZex with all needed dependencies.

The system could be installed on a hard drive via the Core version installer or via PHP-GTK based graphical installer available on the live image.

KateOS was under development between 2003 and 2009, and the last version of 3.6 (including the live image) was released in September 2007. There was released version 4.0 pre1 in July 26, 2008 too, but development of the project has been finished the next year.

The founder and the lead developer of KateOS was Damian Rakowski.

PLD Linux Distribution – an independent Linux distribution, based on RPM packages, targeted to advanced users and administrators. The main usage of the distribution are network servers, but also is suitable for advanced users of workstations.
The project started in 1998 (the 1.0 release in 2002) and it is still under development (?) by a few (?) enthusiasts.

PLD uses its own package manager called “Poldek”, which lets you install and upgrade the packages. Packages are divided into the smallest portions (such as individual plug-ins and modules), what allows administrators to easy controlling the functionality of available applications and the amount of used disk space.

PLD supports network technologies (IPv6), security (AppArmor, Grsecurity, PAM, GSSAPI, TLS/SSL), and the flexible use of different natural languages to communicate with the user.

The current version of PLD is 3.0 and is in endless development stage.

The system installation can be made using PLD Rescue CD images, then chrooting into prepared, new disk partition or via a Live CD which offers Anaconda installer.

PLD Linux Distribution ia available for a various architectures: x86 (i386, i586, i686), PowerPC, AMD64, Sparc, Alpha.

In 2007 an unofficial version of PLD Linux Distribution was created – PLD Titanium. In 2010 a conflict arose between PLD project leaders and PLD Titanium creator. As a result the Titanium distribution was rebranded and in early 2011 separated from PLD with a new name TLD (Titanium Linux Distribution).

PLD is still under active development, and new images of Rescue iso are available from the GitHub.
