SparkyLinux – a desktop-oriented operating system based on the Debian operating system. The project offers a ready to use operating system with a set of various customized lightweight desktops to choose from.

The project was born on October, 2011 as an Ubuntu remix with Enlightenment as the default desktop having the name ue17r (Ubuntu Enlightenment17 Remix). After a few months of testing, the base system was changed to Debian and it was renamed to SparkyLinux.

The default desktop environments are LXQt (former LXDE), MATE and Xfce but users can install other desktops via ‘Sparky APTus’.

As Sparky iso image features a few proprietary packages, the ‘Sparky APTus’ provides a small tool called ‘Non-Free Remover’ which can easily uninstall all ‘contrib’ and ‘non-free’ packages from the system.

Special Editions:
– GameOver Edition, targeted to gamers. It features a large set of free and open-source games and some needed tools;
– Rescue Edition, provides a live system and a large number of applications for recovering broken operating systems;
– Multimedia for audio, video and html pages creating;

SparkyLinux is still under active development, the post is published on 10th Sparky anniversary.

Rescue CD works in live mode, which allows you to clean your computer of viruses without booting the system itself. Thanks to this, it is possible to scan even those elements that are normally inaccessible when the system is running.

The Live system is built on top of Gentoo Linux and uses Xfce as the default desktop.
In addition to the anti-virus scanner that automatically starts when Live system starts, rescue CD comes with a set of basic applications that are part of the Xfce environment. If your computer has an active Internet connection, the antivirus program will automatically update its antivirus signature databases and scanning engines.

Older versions of BitDefender Rescue CD were based on KNOPPIX.
