Gentoox – a specialist Linux distribution based on Gentoo Linux, created for the Xbox – a home video game console.

It retains all the features of the original (portage, sysvinit etc…) but has a patch system created from the ground up, which is specifically designed for Gentoox. “Magic” allows users to install new software, upgrade their kernel and fix bugs. To learn more about magic, run “magic usage” once you have installed Gentoox.

Gentoox runs along side games – you get 3 choices during installation: E, F and Native. Both E and F create a loopback filesystem meaning that none of your drives are formatted during installation (except for cache partitions). If you choose “Native”, then your F: partition is formatted to ReiserFS (making it inaccessible to Xbox applications).

Gentoox can be loaded via a .xbe file, or from a Cromwell based BIOS (which can be flashed to your modchip during installation). When using E or F installations, you are totally risk free – if you don’t like Gentoox, simply delete all the files it installs (about 7 in total) and its gone.

There are three versions of Gentoox: Pro Edition, Home Edition and Media Center Edition. All three are 100% free and opensource, the difference between Home and Pro is that the Home Edition has many software packages preinstalled and preconfigured for instant usability straight out of the box where as Pro doesn’t even have a graphical user interface let alone any “useful” applications. Pro is a bare minimum installation for booting the system, the entire customization of the OS is left in the user’s hands with Pro. Media Center edition is more of a “Plugin” than a separate distribution. It allows you to have a Media Center along with Gentoox Home or Pro.

The project developer is Thomas Pedley.

Litrix Linux – a Gentoo based Linux distribution in live CD format that can also be installed as a desktop operating system on x86 computers. The project was created and developed by Vagner Rodrigues between 2000 and 2011.

The first trial version of Litrix wes released in 2000 with the release of BZS (Brazilian Zip Slackware) a modified version of Slackware which was running on FAT 32 partitions giving an option to Windows 9X users who were not familiar with the GNU/Linux system to have the first contacts without the need to repartition the HD.

In late 2003 due to several problems with print servers and printer filters in Slackware, Vagner began looking for a better alternative to the print filters than APSFILTER used in Slackware.

After creating packages for Slackware from Foomatic + cups to Slackware, Vagner takes a copy of the script that generates the live CD Slax and develops Litrix Linux 1.0. Later Litrix Linux creates a fork of similarities with Slax and passes its own live CD generation script and CD boot.

In 2005 Litrix 2.1 was the time to say goodbye to the Slackware base and switch using the Gentoo base, allowing you to bring new features and ability to be customized for performance.

redWall – (Redis Firewall) is slim Gentoo Linux based image acting as a firewall agent for managing iptables rules on a single server or whole clusters. The port- or IP-based rules are centrally stored in a Redis database and updates are dynamically applied to all hosts running the RedWall image.

redWall firewall runs from a bootable CD-ROM while the configs are saved on a USB Memory stick, Floppy drive or on the Hard Drive. with support to install the OS on a hard disk.

Reporting on the firewall is based on a MySQL database (except for squid) and so presents the advantage of using the firewall also as a Management console or a logging console so multiple firewalls in the network can report back to the management station or do the logging onto the redWall firewall for better presentation and broader visibility of the whole network security.

redWall features tools such as:
– Stateful Firewall (iptables)
– Proxy using Squid
– Intrusion Detection System (IDS) using Snort
– Mail gateway functionality with Virus scanning and Antivirus support
– Support for Bridging, NAT
– DNS support using dnsmasq
– Traffic shaping
– Network Analyzer using nTop and DarkStat
– Network monitoring and Bandwidth monitoring using Zabbix and Jffnms
– SNMP reporting using Cacti
– Webmin support
– Log analysis using BASE
– Good reporting for Squid and rest of the logs using Sarg Report
– Management/Logging console for multiple firewalls on the network

The first versions of red Wall were based on Alpine Linux and RPM packages.

FrogDev – a French live Linux distribution based on Gentoo Linux.

This LiveCD aims to mount a linux system in action to any user. Due to the small size of a Cdrom, not all software can be included.
This LiveCD does not install anything on your computer, as long as you do not request it using the script: frogdev.sh
The frogdev liveCD is based on the GENTOO distribution.

If you install this LiveCD on your computer, it is 100% compatible with this distribution. So you can enjoy all the benefits of this system as well as all the software that comes with this distribution.

License :
This LiveCD is licensed under CeCILL (in order to be compliant with French law) which is compatible with the GPL v2, so you will not find the latest flashplayer or Win32 codecs to play some videos. But once installed the LiveCd, nothing prevents you from installing them.

The last version | Released: 0.3.4 RC2 | March 9, 2005

Flash Linux – a compact distribution designed exclusively to run off 256MB USB keys or other bootable Flash based media. It includes hardware detection (including LAN and Modem), auto configuration, a Gnome desktop, and associated office tools.

System Requirements:
Flash Linux is relatively robust when it comes to hardware auto-detection and recognition. If you come across a device that does not work (that you think either should, or you would like it to) please feel free to submit feedback.
– an IBM PC compatible computer that is capable of booting off a USB Hard Disk is essential
– a minimum of 128Mb of RAM is essential

Recommendations:
– aim for a CPU of Celeron or P4 with a clock speed in excess of 1GHz
– 256Mb of memory (or more) makes for a much nicer user experience
– a graphics display / monitor that runs at either 1024×768 or 1280×1024 is preferred
– a networked PC with access to a DHCP server is preferred
– if no network connection is available, external modems and some internal Winmodems are supported
