Freedows – the Freedows OS Project is creating an open source core Kernel architecture based on the Stanford Cache Kernel model, with the aim to create a stable platform for kernel-level multi-platform emulation.

It was launched during CIAB 2004, Congress and Exhibition of Information Technology of Financial Institutions, as an another Linux distribution with a Brazilian flavor, with the face of Windows XP and ready to run MS Office applications, through Wine Crossover.

Freedows was developed by the Freedows Consortium, created by Cobra Technologia S.A (part of the Banco do Brasil conglomerate) and the Brazilian Association of Free Software Companies (ABRASOL).

It is a distribution geared towards the corporate sector, especially the financial world, however it has several editions: Lite, Professional, SMB, Standard and Thin Client, and the Compact Edition.
