Sulix – a Linux distribution based on Fedora, developed for education institutes.

Sulix Professional was developed directly to meet the educational needs of educational institutions, creating a free and easy-to-use computer software package that can help you forget about the challenges of IT systems. Sulix Professional offers the opportunity for these technical tools to really help the teaching work and not set boundaries in education.

It does this outside of school, as students have the opportunity to install packages and its applications on their own home computers, allowing them to carry out their assigned tasks in a graphic environment.

Connected to your school’s wired or wireless network, SuliX Professional can automatically detect and connect to SuliXerver services. It provides comprehensive networking services for students and faculty during classroom education. This includes central access for teachers and students, secure registration of SuliX-based workstations, network file sharing, printing, mailing, calendar management, as well as using digital learning tools, support for classroom teaching and thesis writing, account control, and full control over student workstations and the possibility of online intervention.

Feliz – a bootable live CD which offers the quickest and easiest way to install Arch Linux and a selection of software from the Arch repos.

Feliz purpose is to speed up installation of Arch Linux, plus a desktop environment and a ‘shopping list’ of extras like web browsers, office software and programming tools. An initialising phase gathers essential data of location, username, and passwords, and works with the user to set up their partitioning and desktop environment requirements. The script then runs without further intervention to the end.

It starts a live session of Arch Linux, and runs the script. All you have to do is follow the prompts. Installation follows closely the Arch Wiki beginners’ guide, and hopefully you will understand something of the process by the time it has finished; you may even like to try a manual installation with the help of the Wiki.

The live system works in text mode.

Feliz is a successor of Achoo! project, both founded and developed by Elizabeth Mills.

PC-BSD – an open-source operating system based on FreeBSD and fully compatible with it. PC-BSD is easy to use and targeted to home and office users.

It has an easy-to-use graphical installer, the default environment is KDE, but the installer (since version 9.0) also offers GNOME, LXDE and Xfce desktops. From 2014, the project developed own, Qt based with Fluxbox window manager, desktop environment called Lumina.

PC-BSD uses the “.pbi” packages. The package manager allows you to install packages with dependencies as well.
Unlike FreeBSD and Linux, the “.pbi” packages contain all the libraries needed to run the program, so the manager installs each one separately.
The advantage of this policy is ease of installing packages, the disadvantage of their large size.

PC-BSD was offered in form of hybrid DVD/USB installation media.

In August 2016, PC-BSD changed its name to TrueOS and is a rolling release operating system.

The project founder is Kris Moore.

VLOS uses the Red Hat Anaconda installer to make it easier for end users to install it on a hard drive, with GNOME as a default desktop environment.

The purpose of VLOS is to make the Linux operating system more accessible to home and office users. It combines the power of ebuilds and portage and compiling all software from source (aside from a select few larger ones, which are available in binary) into an easy-to-use package.

In December 2009, VLOS has been rebuilt with Funtoo, a fork of Gentoo Linux.

ParallelKnoppix – a GNU/Linux operating system on Live CD that allows you to develop a Beowulf style cluster, which uses MPI libraries. Open MPI, LAM-MPI and MPICH are installed and ready to use. It allows setting up a cluster of computers for parallel processing using MPI. PK includes extensive examples using MPITB for Gnu Octave.

ParallelKnoppix is a fast and easy way to create a HPC cluster for parallel computing. It takes less than 10 minutes to go from a cold start to having a running cluster. Using virtualization tools, you can create a real PK cluster from any distribution of Linux, or from other popular operating systems.

Clusters from 2 to 200 machines are supported. A cluster created with PK is temporary – nothing is installed to any of the computers in the cluster. It’s also single-user.

ParallelKnoppix is developed principally at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

The ParallelKnoppix project been renamed to PelicanHPC.
