RoninOS – the “Masterless Distro” based on Debian Bullseye/Sid, Linux Live Kit and the LXDE desktop. A Debian based Live distro that is able to be persistent off usb or hard drive, installable to hard drive in “frugal” mode or full install to hard drive or play live in either default or toram mode with/without persistence and without mounting or changing any hard drive partitions, etc and will run off a ntfs/fat32 or ext2/3/4 formatted partitions using Grub, Syslinux or Extlinux.

Goals – To be totally free to boot Live off various environments and computers without harming or changing anything on said systems (unless you want to), to have automatic persistency across reboots and boot to ram mode. Also, to be able to be installed manually in either frugal mode or true hard drive install mode as a Debian install.

Dual Kernel – RoninOS comes with not only the latest Buster/Sid kernel but also the latest Xanmod kernel, you may choose either at boot menu.

Networking – WICD may not pick up your ethernet/wireless so use Ceni available in the main menu/internet, note you may be auto connected at boot but WICD may not show it.

Cheatcodes – Since RoninOS is based off of and runs like Slax, cheatcodes such as persistence, toram and others like load=module_name or noload=module_name etc are possible, some cheatcodes no longer work. Cheatcodes for toram and persistence and possibly others can be combined, ie “slax.flags=perch,toram” will boot it persistent and toram. You may edit the boot codes at the boot screen by hitting TAB button if using syslinux/extlinux or e if using grub. You can also directly edit syslinux.cfg/grub.cfg during live session (as root).

Passwords are root=root and user live=live

So.Di.Linux – a Linux distribution which features collection of educational software for Linux. It contains free and open source software and is distributed under the GPL 2.0 license. It is a distribution of the GNU/Linux operating system, bootable in live mode, equipped with specific programs for teaching and learning.

The 2017 version of So.Di.Linux Orizzonti is compatible with Linux Mint 18/Ubuntu Mate 16.04 distributions.

So.Di.Linux is created by the Institute for Didactic Technologies (ITD-CNR), born from an initial collaboration with AICA (Italian Association for Computer Science and Automatic Calculation) and is distributed in two formats: DVD and CD live media with possibility to install it on a hard drive.

The first versions of So.Di.Linux were published between 2003 and 2005 and worked on CD-ROM (at the time very popular in Italian schools) the latest version (with long-term support) was published in 2017 .

Since 2014, collaborations with CTS have been formalized and other versions of SoDiLinux CTS have been created with particular attention to inclusive education and a software repository has also been created that is also open to users of other versions of Linux.

So.Di.Linux offers teachers a large number of free educational software, tools for inclusion, guides, manuals and information sheets taken from the “Service for documentation and guidance on educational software and other digital resources for learning “managed by ITD-CNR; these cards contain information about the school level, the subjects of reference and information about further documentation available online.

So.Di.Linux contains numerous educational software and tools for creating multimedia educational content and for interacting with IWBs (Interactive Multimedia Whiteboards) organized in special menus through a categorization – not present in other distributions – by school level, purpose of use and in alphabetical order; it is also equipped with multiple (free) tools for socio-educational inclusion:
– screen reader
– augmentative communication software (AAC)
– D.S.A. clearing tools and B.E.S.
– easy access tools.

GuruMan Linux – a KDE spin on Manjaro KDE Linux 18. GuruMan is based on x86_64-stable with kernel 4.19.1.

The GuruMan Linux KDE-18.0-stable-x86_64.iso can be installed in either a VM (Oracle VirtualBox or VMWare Tools) but I have integrated OpenVM-Tools into the ISO image which should work for either environment.

You can, of course, install GuruMan Linux on bare metal using a utility like Etcher (which I recommend) to create a bootable USB or create a bootable DVD and install it that way.

PCManFM File Manager has been incorporated into this ISO for those who want to replace Dolphin as their file manager of choice due to the security issues surrounding Dolphin that don’t exist in PCManFM. I left Dolphin in this distro, however, just in case you prefer that file manager instead regardless of security risk. Filezilla & gftp have been included as file transfer applications to choose from. My preference is gftp. If you use FireFox Web browser (my defacto Web browser in Linux), you will see an icon that pops up on the Task bar asking if you wish to install Plasma Browser Integration to support the add-on in Firefox for KDE. This is recommended to install. This distro uses the sddm display manager and pamac which replaces octopi as the package manager in GuruMan Linux.

The project founder is Dan Calloway.

ROSLIMS (ROmanian Simple Linux for Medical Students) – a live Linux distribution based on Knoppix. Version 1.2 developed in order to be a first Romanian open source educational platform, respectively to bring to the local IT landscape a viable Linux desktop solution, similar in functionality to proprietary operation systems (Windows, Mac OS) and to be easy to use.

The ROSLIMS distribution is characterized by:

– very good compatibility with established office suites;
– easy installation of new applications by providing local support for cmg files for the first time (klik.atekon.de), a technology that excludes the possibility of incompatibilities at the library level between certain versions of programs and ensures a simple installation, such as point-and-click;
– a wide variety of pre-installed software, including complex educational suites (KDE Education) or emulators of other operating systems – Wine;
– user interface of your choice in Romanian (default) and English, etc.

Via ROSLIMS you can access almost all types of common applications, all free:
