Netkit Live – a live Linux distribution based on Knoppix, and features Netkit exploits open source software (mostly licensed under GPL) and is heavily based on the User Mode Linux (UML) variant of the Linux kernel.

Netkit is an environment for setting up and performing networking experiments at low cost and with little effort. It allows to “create” several virtual network devices (full-fledged routers, switches, computers, etc.) that can be easily interconnected in order to form a network on a single PC. Networking equipments are virtual but feature many of the characteristics of the real ones, including the configuration interface.

Netkit consists of three components: a core including the user interface and the documentation, a kernel for the virtual machines, and a filesystem containing the networking tools and services. These components are distributed separately to limit the impact of updates, however all the components are required for Netkit to work properly.

Netkit is the result of the joint work of several people from the Computer Networks Laboratory of the Roma Tre University and from the Linux User Group LUG Roma 3.

AGNULA (A GNU/Linux distribution for audio) – a project started by the European Commission, aimed at creating two Linux distributions that could be used to process music and sound: ReHMuDi (Red Hat Multimedia Distribution) and DeMuDi (Debian Multimedia Distribution). The project has developed as a multimedia harvester with many practical solutions that are not found even in commercial multimedia systems.

The project was coordinated by Centro Tempo Reale (Florence, Italy) and sees the participation of a range of actors from the research, university and business arenas.

The project was funded by the European Commission from April 1, 2002 to March 31, 2004. When the Commission stopped funding the project, volunteers continued work on DeMuDi, while work on the ReHMuDi branch was discontinued.

The purposes of AGNULA can be summarized as follows:
– support the development of GNU/Linux distributions completely dedicated to audio applications.
– provide coordinated access to the widest combination of Free audio software in a coherent environment. This will enhance state-of-the-art research and development in the audio field.
– provide a audio system based on Libre Software which will enhance customized usage (useful in cultural and artistic environments).
– help spreading sensibility on the topics of Libre Software (with specific attention paid to audio/video applications and content distribution).

FTOSX – a Linux distribution from Italy based on Fedora. It uses the KDE desktop environment and offers support to 32-bit x86 (i686) platform. The goal of the FTOSX Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general-purpose operating system exclusively from open
source software, but specially to be a Personal Operating System.

The FTOSX Desktop Project starts in August 2000, to create a development environment to solve the Graphical User Interface under GNU/Linux OS.
The name “FTOSX” stand for “Future Technologies Operating System based on the Linux Kernel and the X Window System”, therefore, basically X stand for X Window System.

The name is similar to “MacOSX” from Apple Inc, that adopt UNIX inside the OS.
In the past years the FTOSX takes the direction to be the arena to Develop the Personal Operating System, originally called YourLinux.

FTOSX Desktop 2004 is optimized for Pentium PRO (and later) CPUs, but also supports Pentium-class CPUs. This approach has been taken because Pentium-class optimizations actually result in reduced performance for non-Pentium-class processors.
* Recommended for text-mode: 200 MHz Pentium-class or better
* Recommended for graphical: 400 MHz Pentium II or better

The first version was launched on June 19, 2003, the latest version was 2004 rc4 which was launched on September 8, 2004.
FTOSX was managed by a single person: Dr. Giovanni A. Orlando.

The Knorpora edition of Knoppix contains programs and data files that should be of interest to computational linguistics students (WordNet, the Natural Language Toolkit, taggers, etc.)

When you launch Knorpora on your computer, you can immediately start learning how to use a UNIX-like operating system while at the same time experimenting with the kind of UNIX-command-line-based NLP tools that make UNIX the ideal operating system for NLP work.

Even if you already work with UNIX, Knorpora may give you the chance to try some interesting software before you install it.
