KateOS – an independent Linux distribution, originally based on Slackware.

The first version of Kate Linux 1.0 ‘Rabbit’ was released in October 09, 2004.
Kate Linux 2.0 ‘Zyklon’ released in April 09, 2005.
KateOS 3.0 ‘Virgin’ released in July 09, 2006.

Started from version 3.0, KateOS package manager uses TGZex (.tgz) packages, which unlike Slackware packages support dependency tracking (optional), internationalized descriptions, and was designed for ease of update. KateOS uses its own, native package manager tools: PKG and Updateos. Updateos is similar in work to Debian’s ‘apt-get’, and due to cooperate with PKG could install TGZex with all needed dependencies.

The system could be installed on a hard drive via the Core version installer or via PHP-GTK based graphical installer available on the live image.

KateOS was under development between 2003 and 2009, and the last version of 3.6 (including the live image) was released in September 2007. There was released version 4.0 pre1 in July 26, 2008 too, but development of the project has been finished the next year.

The founder and the lead developer of KateOS was Damian Rakowski.

ConnochaetOS – a fully free/libre GNU/Linux distribution for x86 computers with limited resources, based on Slackware and Salix OS. It contains no proprietary software or firmware, honours the KISS principle and is targeted for desktop use.

ConnochaetOS is available as an installable CD media, which lets users install the system on a hard dive via text based installer.
The installer offers users choosing teh installation mode:
– full – installs the core system, X Server, IceWM window manager and a set of lightweight applications for any purpose
– base – installs the core system, X Server, IceWM window manager and a web browser
– core – installs the core system only (no X)

ConnochaetOS is the successor of DeLi Linux which is not under development any more.
The development of ConnochaetOS started in 2010 and was based on Arch Linux, until 2012.
After 3 years of break about, the developer released a new version 14.1 based on Slackware and Salix OS, which was full free of the proprietary components. It was the last version of ConnochaetOS too.

ConnochaetOS is targeted to x86 old machines, but uses the Linux kernel for i686 CPU.

In June 2011, the developer Henry Jensen started a new project called “Deli(cate) Linux” which is a successor of ConnochaetOS and DeLi Linux.

DR-DOS/OpenDOS Enhancement Project – the OpenDOS 7.01 source code based operating system develops by Udo Kuhnt between 2005 and 2011.

DR-DOS (DR DOS up to version 6.0) is an operating system of the DOS family for IBM PC personal computers. It was originally developed by Gary Kildall from Digital Research and derived from Concurrent PC DOS 6.0, which was an advanced successor of CP/M-86. After changed the ownership of the system, later versions was produced as Novell DOS 7.

In 1996 Novel sold the system to Caldera, who changed the name to Caldera OpenDOS 7.01 and released the source code of the kernel under an Open Source license. The name of the system has been changed back to DR-DOS and the model has been changet to closed source. Caldera Thinclients, a subsidiary of Caldera which later renamed itself to Lineo, continued the development of DR-DOS as an OS for embedded systems, before they abandoned its development in favour of Linux.

DR-DOS has been bought by Devicelogics company in November 2002.
In March 2004 the Devicelogics released DR-DOS 8.0 for the embedded systems market.

In July 2002, Udo Kuhnt used the source code of DR-DOS 7.01/OpenDOS as a base and started to write his own set of patches for it under a new the name of DR-DOS/OpenDOS Enhancement Project.

The last version of DR-DOS 7.01.08 was released on July 21, 2011.

Foresight Linux – an independent Linux distribution, based on rPath Linux, targeted to desktop computers users. Foresight was created by Ken VanDine, and was developing by Foresight community since April of 2013 (the last version).

Foresight was using Conary package management system, which could updates those specific files in packages which need to be updated. Conary also has the advantage of very granular dependency resolution, and a relatively easy packaging process.
The system were using the rolling release model, what was very useful avoiding reinstalling the system every next iso images were released.

The main desktop environment of Foresight was GNOME, and the latest version of GNOME was always provided as quick as possible to the end users.
Starting from Foresight 2.5.0, developers offered the system with KDE and Xfce desktops as well.

The latest, available iso images of Foresight 2.5.3 can be downloaded with GNOME, LXDE or Xfce desktops of your choice.
