Cinnarch – a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux shipped with Cinnamon as the default desktop environment.

Cinnarch is a rolling release and uses the Arch Linux official repositories, AUR and its own software repositories as well.
The package management tool is Pacman, but PacmanXG4 – a GUI front-end is available too.

Cinnarch offers a Live graphical installer called “Cnchi” as well as a text based too.

Cinnarch was under development between May 2012 (the first release) and April 2013.
Cinnamon is a Gnome 3 Shell fork, but due to problems with GTK+ 3.6 libraries, the developers switched to Gnome 3 desktop in the last Cinnarch release. After that the project has been closed and moved to the new one called “Antergos”.

Commodore OS (Commodore OS Vision) – a Linux distribution based on Linux Mint, and created for Commodore and games fans.

Commodore OS Vision is available only for x86-64 architectures, uses the GNOME 2 desktop and features Compiz/Emerald desktop effects. It includes pre-installed many games, Firefox and Chromium web browsers, LibreOffice, Scribus, GIMP, Blender, OpenShot and Cinellera, Ardour and Audacity, Linux MultiMedia Studio, etc. It has a classic Commodore slant with a selection of applications reminiscent of their classic Amiga counterparts.

Commodore OS is not compatible with Commodore 64 software, but it contains VICE, an open-source emulator of the Commodore 64, Commodore 128, CBM-II, Commodore PET, Commodore VIC-20 and Commodore Plus/4.

Commodore OS is designed as a way to look as the old Commodore system.

Commodore OS Vision was developed by Commodore USA between 2011 and 2012.
The last version 1.0 beta 9 was based on Linux Mint 10.

Commodore OS 32 bit (COS) – a Linux distribution, developed by a guy called ‘spannernick’.
It is not related to Commodore OS Vision 64 bit, but it based on Linux Mint too, and looks similar to the 64 bit edition.

COS 32bit was made to be working on a Pentium 4 which is 32-bit processor. Commodore OS 32-bit will provide emulators so you can play the Commodore 64 and Amiga games and programs. Games and demos for the Commodore PET, VIC-20, CBM-II, C16, C64, C128 and Commodore AMIGA can be run.

Jibbed – a bootable live CD based on the NetBSD Operating System that works directly from a CD without touching a hard drive

Jibbed is a (non-installable) live CD based on NetBSD.
It is built from the latest NetBSD sources from the HEAD branch.
Jibbed offers the live system only (no installer included), which lets you learn about the NetBSD without installing it. Automatic hardware detection provides support for a wide variety of graphics cards, sound cards, network interfaces, and USB devices.

The founder and developer of Jibbed is Zafer Aydoğan.
The last version 6.0 was released in 2012.
In October 2015, after 3 years of break, the developer released a new version 7.0.

OpenSolaris – an open source operating system based on Solaris created by Sun Microsystems. OpenSolaris is a descendant of the UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4) code base developed by Sun and AT&T in the late 1980s. It was based on Solaris, which was originally released by Sun in 1991.

OpenSolaris uses a network-based package management system “Image Packaging System” (pkg(5)), which could add, remove, and manage installed software and to update to newer releases. It includes a set of free applications, including popular desktop (GNOME 2) and server software.

In 2010, after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Oracle stopped open development of the system, and replaced the OpenSolaris with the proprietary Solaris Express. On September 13, 2010 Steven Stallion announcement at his blog, that the development of OpenSolaris is finished.

A group of former OpenSolaris developers forked the core software under the new name OpenIndiana, which is a part of the Illumos Foundation.

There are a few forks based on OpenSolaris, such as: BeleniX, EON ZFS Storage, Illumos, Jaris OS, MartUX, MilaX, Nexenta OS, NexentaStor, OpenIndiana, OpenSXCE, SchilliX, SmartOS, StormOS.

The last version of BackTrack is 5 R3, which is available in two flavors: GNOME 2 and KDE, both for i686 and amd64 CPU.

As of March 2013, the Offensive Security team re-based the project to Debian and re-named it to Kali Linux.

ZEN-mini – a minimalist Linux distribution based on PCLinuxOS, which uses GNOME as its default desktop environment.

It is a minimal livecd that is bootable and can be installed on a hard drive.
It comes with a few applications pre-installed only, but additional software can be installed through the Synaptic Software Manager.

The project started in 2008, the founder and developer of ZEN-mini was Don_Crissti.
Between 2009 and 2012, ZEN-mini was under development by ‘siamer’.
In 2012, siamer passed the project to LinuxGator.org, but the website is out of service now.

SchilliX – an OpenSolaris based complete open-source operating system

SchilliX contains Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) only.
It runs from CD and can be optionally installed on a hard disk or a USB memory stick.

Sun Microsystem released the OpenSolaris code on June 14, 2005. It contains the modular kernel and userspace software together called “ON” (Operating System/Networking). 3 days after, the SchilliX team released the first OpenSource Distribution called Schillix.
The first release was published on 17 June 2005, by its initial developers: Jörg Schilling, Fabian Otto, Thomas Blaesing, and Tobias Kirschstein.

Version 0.7.1 used the Illumos project for the build.
Version 0.7.2 was the first OpenSolaris-like distro that capable of compiling the OpenSolaris source base.

SchilliX likes to make it easy for people who change from e.g. Linux but not on the expense of reduced default functionality.

The latest version of SchilliX 0.8 was released in August 2012.

SolusOS – a Debian based, beginner-friendly Linux distribution with GNOME 2 desktop.

SolusOS 1.x is based on stable version of Debian GNU/Linux “Squeeze”, and the first release was published in May 2012.
It features the GNOME 2 desktop, a set of applications for everyday tasks, such as: LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, XChat, OpenShot Video Editor, Transmission, VLC, PlayOnLinux, Java and Flash plugins, Synaptic package manager, etc.
SolusOS FirstRunWizard helps installing non-free drivers for NVidia and ATI graphics cards.

The next release of SolusOS 2 was built from stretch.
It used GNOME 2 desktop and then its own fork of GNOME 2 Flashback (the GNOME 3 Fallback Mode), called “Consort”.
The project has been closed in 2013.

The founder and developer of SolusOS is Ikey Doherty.

There is another project develops by Ikey – EvolveOS, which uses Budgie desktop. It was renamed to Solus in 2015, so make sure that SolusOS and Solus are two different projects.
