Chromium OS – an open-source development version of Chrome OS, which is a Linux distribution designed by Google to work primarily with web applications. In preliminary design documents, Google describes a three-tier architecture: firmware, web browser and window manager, and system-level software and userland services.

Historically, Chromium OS was using the Ubuntu-based Linux kernel for the first several releases, but have since then moved on to track the upstream mainline kernel directly, applying changes for the features and stability. The source code has been published in 2009.

Chromium OS “Vanilla” has been created by Liam McLoughlin “Hexxeh”, a 17-year-old college student from Manchester, England. He was building boots from a USB memory stick and included features that Google engineers had not yet implemented, such as support for the Java programming language.
He stopped building it in the April of 2013.

aptosid – a Linux distribution based on the unstable branch of Debian code name “Sid”.

The project is a continuation of sidux.
In September 2010, after the sidux has been Discontinued, the project was reborn and renamed to aptosid.

aptosid offers a custom kernel with support for many modern hardware devices, a rolling release cycle, and a collection of tools and scripts to make desktop administration easier. It uses a true ‘rolling-release-cycle’, and thus continues to remain current.

The system was shipped as bootable live CD with KDE (lite) or Xfce desktop environments and KDE (full) DVD media as well.
aptosid can be installed on a hard or USB flash drive via the aptosid live installer.

The last version of aptosid was released in May 2013.

Siduction, an another Debian “Sid” based Linux distribution, has been created on the top of aptosid as its fork.

Vyatta – a Debian based Linux distribution, which transform a standard x86/x86-64 machine into an enterprise-class router/firewall.

Vyatta provides software-based virtual router, virtual firewall and VPN products for Internet Protocol networks (IPv4 and IPv6). It contains networking applications such as Quagga, OpenVPN, ant many others.

The Vyatta system is intended as a replacement for Cisco IOS 1800 through ASR 1000[2] series Integrated Services Routers (ISR) and ASA 5500 security appliances, with a strong emphasis on the cost and flexibility inherent in an open source, Linux-based system[3] running on commodity x86 hardware or in VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, Open Source Xen and KVM virtual environments.

In 2012, Brocade Communications Systems acquired Vyatta and renamed it “Vyatta, a Brocade Company”.
In April, 2013, Brocade renamed the product from the Vyatta Subscription Edition (VSE) to the Brocade Vyatta 5400 vRouter.

In October 2013 an independent group started a fork of Vyatta Core under a new name VyOS.
