Nexenta OS (Nexenta Core Platform) – an open source operating system based on OpenSolaris kernel and Ubuntu userland.

The project started after Sun Microsystems started the OpenSolaris project in June 2005.
The 1st version of Nexenta OS was released in February 2008, and was based on OpenSolaris b82 and Ubuntu 6.06 “Dapper Drake”.
The 2nd version was released in May 2009, and was using packages of Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy Heron” LTS and OpenSolaris kernel b104.
The 3rd one 3.0 released in August 2010, was using he same userland of Ubuntu 8.04 and OpenSolaris kernel b134.
In late 2011 the Nexenta OS brand was terminated and replaced with Illumian, which is derived from community development for illumos and OpenIndiana.

The installation CD installs the core system only, with 32 or 64 bit kernel.
Updates and new packages (deb) can be installed via APT (Advanced Packaging Tool) from the official Nexenta repositories (not active).

There is NexentaStor – a proprietary operating system built on top of the Nexenta Core Platform, optimized for use in virtualized server environments including NAS, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel applications, and is built around the ZFS file system.
