Italian GRASS – a live Linux distribution based Kubuntu and later on Xubuntu, with preinstalled GRASS GIS application.

The early versions were based on Kubuntu and were available as live DVD iso images.
The last versions (4 & 5) are based on Xubuntu an can be downloaded and tested in a form of virtual machine image.
The preconfigured user in the virtual machine is: grass with password: grass

The virtual machine automatically mounts a shared directory in the “grass” user home directory. The shared directory on the host operating system must be created from the virtual machine menu, as a permanent share and be called “shared”.

The latest version of Italian GRASS Virtual Machine 5.0 is based on Xubuntu 14.04 with GRASS GIS 6.4.3 and 7.0 beta, R 3.0.2 with GRASS support (gstat, spgrass6 and lmstat packages), QGIS 2.0.1 with GRASS plugin, PostgreSQL 9.3.4, PostGIS 2.1 .2, pgAdminIII 1.18.1, pgagent 3.3.0 and GRASS tutorials.

GRASS GIS, commonly referred to as GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System), is a free and open source Geographic Information System (GIS) software suite used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics and maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization. GRASS GIS is currently used in academic and commercial settings around the world, as well as by many governmental agencies and environmental consulting companies. It is a founding member of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo).

The Italian GRASS was created by the GIS GROUP of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Trento.
