FreeSBIE – a live CD based on the FreeBSD operating system which works directly from a CD, without touching your hard drive.

The first version of FreeSBIE was released in February 2004, which was based on FreeBSD 5.2.1. The second version sowed up in summer 2015, and the last one 2.0.1 in February 2007, based on FreeBSD 6.2.

The live CD features various applications and tools, such as: X11, Fluxbox, Xfce, Firefox, MPlayer, XMMS, OpenOffice.org, GIMP. The live system does not start the X Server itself, just launches a wallpaper (?) with the project logo. Pressing ‘Esc’ lets you quit and log it to the shell, then type ‘startx’ to launch the default Xfce desktop.

The developer offers a toolkit which can be used for creation of a CD and to make embedded images a-la miniBSD or nanoBSD.
