March Linux – a simple, lean, fast and Arch Linux based distribution for a desktop which urges the users to learn Linux instead of holding their hands at every step.

Just like Arch Linux, from which it is derived, March is also a lightweight and flexible distro which tries to Keep It Simple. Configuration is very easy, mostly involving editing of text-files. Although a few GUI config tools are available, they all try to be compliant with the Arch way, which essentially stands for “freedom of choice, keep it simple, learning, and user-control”. This is what the guiding philosophy of March aims to be.

At the same time, March Linux offers you a ready-to-run environment with a Fluxbox desktop and a host of useful apps.
You can do the following right out of the box :
– Listen to music and watch movies in a variety of formats, record sounds
– View pictures and perform graphical editing
– Connect to and browse internet, check emails, download via torrents, perform ftp transfers
– Play a number of cool games, including a few DOS based ones
– View and edit document files, create spreadsheets, view pdf-s, perform calculations, take notes
– Do small programming in a number of languages with an IDE

March is designed to run amply well on a 128 mb RAM machine, PII or later (or equivalent); a 160 mb RAM is recommended for best performance.

ESCLinux – a Linux live-CD, made for carrying interpreters, compilers and libraries for a few IF authoring systems. It boots from the cdrom drive or from an usb key, and doesn’t need any other operative system on the hard drive (e.g. Microsoft Windows) to work. It focuses mostly on Inform, but TADS and Hugo tools are included too.

The first version of ESCLinux was released in 2005 (?) and was based on Knoppix, with KDE desktop as default.
After that, up to version 2009, ESCLinux was based on Arch Linux and was using GNOME desktop environment.
The latest version of ESCLinux 2014 is based on Linux Mint 13 “Maya”, which is based on Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS (Precise Pangolin), and features Xfce desktop as default.

As the developer said (translation from French):

I wanted the system to fit on a mini-CD, but it was expense of available features: this cd was a little too complicated to use optimally for those who do not know linux.

I have restarted this project by releasing it on a complete cd, with a much more modern desktop: KDE. The fact that this cdrom is based on the linux-live script makes it much easier to work with. Unfortunately, it is still not easy to install the live-cd on a hard drive, even if it is possible, this is not for the beginner. On the other hand, it is planned all that it is necessary to connect by the network on this machine (ideal if one has several computers available).

The maintainer of ESCLinux is Eric Forgeot.

Architecture: x86, x86_64
Based on: Arch Linux

CTKArch – a minimalistic Arch Linux setup (and not a distribution), that comes with a set of carefully selected applications and provides maximum hardware support, exclusively using free open-source software.

It aims at providing the indispensable base applications for a desktop installation, while saving time on the installation process by autoconfiguring the system, in the same way you would have done by hand.

The included applications are chosen among the lighter available, yet keeping the interface user-friendly and the benefits of a rolling-release distribution: CTKArch has become the running proof that this is possible!

Its base principle is to leave the users with a choice, when there is one: applications are only included if their usefulness isn’t questionable.

CTKArch features a powerful add-on system, and support for a persistent data partition, that allow to easily add custom applications to the live system, leaving the base ISO devoid of any piece of software some people may not appreciate.

The CTKArch live CD/USB can be installed, for instance on your hard disk or memory card.

Once installed, it becomes a classical Arch Linux installation, with applications for web browsing, e-mail, chat, FTP, file-management & archiving, office, image, audio and video viewing & edition, and CD burning; just as if you had spent your day choosing them.

The live iso provides support for English and French languages out of the box.

FaunOS – a portable (easy-to-carry), fully integrated Linux operating system with over 600 preinstalled packages. It is specifically designed to run from a portable USB memory device (such as a USB flash drive). It can also be configured to boot from other media, such as DVD, and even the internal hard drive, but we mainly focus on detachable media.

FaunOS is a live system. It’s designed to run without setup on most modern x86-based systems. Because it allows you to save changes back to the USB, i.e. to customize and make it your own, FaunOS can be your primary OS. We call it your “portable operating environment”, or POE, for short.

The system boots straight into graphical mode. This makes for a gentle, and largely intuitive, “getting started” learning curve for most any user–Windows users, included. (We think it’s a great way to wet one’s feet in Linux, even if one isn’t planning on becoming a “power user.”) And best of all, you’ll get to keep running your POE (and all your customizations) on that new notebook you’re planning to buy, for example.

FaunOS doesn’t read, change or install anything on the computer’s internal hard drive–unless you specifically ask it to. This means it’s safe to take your USB to a computer you don’t own and boot from it. When you finish, shutdown, and detach your USB key, there is no trace of any of your activity on that computer. So using FaunOS, you’re protected from malware, spyware, viruses and the like that may exist on the host machine’s hard drive.
