Astra Linux – a Linux distribution based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system, developed to meet the needs of the Russian army, other armed forces and intelligence agencies.

It provides data protection up to the level of “top secret” in the Russian class of classified information. It has been officially approved by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control and the Federal Security Service.

The OS developer is Rusbitech Scientific/Production Enterprise, which implements solutions in accordance with the Decree of the Russian Government No. 2299-р of 17/10/2010, which orders federal authorities and budgetary institutions to implement free software.

The OS releases are called Hero Cities in Russia and CIS. There is one release for “general purpose” code called “Oryol”, which is intended to “achieve small and medium business goals”. Other releases are designated as “special” – “Smolensk” for computers with x86-64 processors, “Tula” for network equipment, “Novorossiysk” for ARM mobile devices, and “Murmansk” for IBM System Z mainframes.

Rusbitech also produces the “soft/trusted boot control module” MAKSIM-M1 (“М643М1”) with a PCI bus. It prevents unauthorized access and offers other enhanced digital security features. In addition to Astra Linux, the module also supports operating systems with Linux kernels 2.6.x and 3.x.x, as well as several Microsoft Windows operating systems.

It is declared that Astra Linux licenses comply with Russian and international laws and “do not contradict the spirit and requirements of the GPL license”. Astra Linux Special Edition is used in the Russian National Defense Control Center.

Astra Linux is considered a Debian derivative, Rusbitech has partnerships with The Linux Foundation and The Document Foundation.
