Android XR – an operating system developed by Google for extended reality (XR) immersive media systems, based on Android.
It was unveiled in October 2025 in collaboration with Samsung. The operating system is designed for XR devices, including Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset and smart glasses developed by Google DeepMind. Android XR is connected to the AI-powered chatbot Gemini.
Following the commercial failure of Google Glass—an earlier headset product—Google acquired VR companies such as Tilt Brush and Owlchemy Labs and pursued other wearable computing projects, such as Google Cardboard and Google Daydream, which were later discontinued. In 2021, Google revived its XR efforts with a project codenamed Project Iris, an AR headset with a newly developed operating system. However, after the release of Apple’s Vision Pro in 2024, Google discontinued the project. A year later, Google announced Android XR as the spiritual successor to Project Iris.
At Google I/O in May 2025, Google unveiled its new AI glasses.
