PelicanHPC GNU/Linux (formerly: ParallelKnoppix) – a specialized Linux distribution, built on the top of Debian, providing turnkey solutions for computer clusters.

A cluster of computers – a group of interconnected computing units that work together to provide an integrated work environment.

The PelicanHPC live system is built using scripts from the Debian Live project. To create your own version you only need the ‘live-build’, ‘deboostrap’, ‘rsync’ and ‘make_pelican’ packages. All of them are available on the PelicanHPC live iso image.

The most important advantages of PelicanHPC:
• includes a stable version of OpenMPI, an MPI implementation.
• available for 64 bit processors. Older versions of the system are available for 32-bit machines.
• Includes Linpack HPL benchmark.
• Pelican releases are built and tested using a stable version of Debian GNU Linux.

Pelikan 3.x is based on Debian 7 “Wheezy”.
Pelikan 4.x is based on Debian 8 “Jessie”.

ParallelKnoppix – a GNU/Linux operating system on Live CD that allows you to develop a Beowulf style cluster, which uses MPI libraries. Open MPI, LAM-MPI and MPICH are installed and ready to use. It allows setting up a cluster of computers for parallel processing using MPI. PK includes extensive examples using MPITB for Gnu Octave.

ParallelKnoppix is a fast and easy way to create a HPC cluster for parallel computing. It takes less than 10 minutes to go from a cold start to having a running cluster. Using virtualization tools, you can create a real PK cluster from any distribution of Linux, or from other popular operating systems.

Clusters from 2 to 200 machines are supported. A cluster created with PK is temporary – nothing is installed to any of the computers in the cluster. It’s also single-user.

ParallelKnoppix is developed principally at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

The ParallelKnoppix project been renamed to PelicanHPC.
