Newton OS – an operating system for the Apple Newton PDA, which was released by Apple in 1993-1997.

Newton OS was written entirely in C++. It was characterized by low power consumption and productive use of available RAM, like the original Apple Macintosh, most applications were built into ROM – the Newton’s memory, and thus saved DRAM and flash memory for user applications.

There is no multitasking capability at the application level. The Newton OS can run applications written in C++ and NewtonScript.

Newton OS has benefited from technologies that even Mac OS did not have at the time. Some technologies have also been recovered in Mac OS X, such as the handwriting recognition system.

Features:
– Reactive sound – By clicking on icons and menus, the device emits a sound. It will be found later in Mac OS 8.
– Icons – Applications are opened from icons, as in Mac OS.
– Tabs – As with browser web pages, documents are arranged in a horizontal bar of tabs.
– Screen rotation – Starting with Newton OS 2.0, the screen can be turned over in word processing or drawing mode.
– Printing – Documents on Newton OS can be printed.
– Document exchanges – Documents can be sent via an infrared signal either by email or fax.
