IBM i – an operating system created by IBM, released in 1988 and became known as OS/400. In 2004, it was renamed to i5/OS and is currently called IBM i. It is a multi-user operating system with preemptive multitasking.
The characteristic features of IBM i are:
– object-oriented architecture
– 128-bit pointer width (currently implemented by microcode on a 64-bit architecture);
– single-level memory (Single Level Storage), i.e. access to disk memory is indistinguishable from access to operational memory;
– integrated DB2 for i DBMS (integrated with the file system);
– very high security, including the impossibility of creating executable code by the user or a user program and the absence of an assembler;
– tight integration with hardware, which does not allow this OS to be installed on servers from other manufacturers.
The latest version of IBM i is 7.4, announced on April 23, 2019 and released on June 21, 2019 (Version Support Schedule).
Supported platforms:
– IBM AS/400
– IBM eServer iSeries
– IBM System i
– IBM Power Systems
