AROS – AROS Research Operating System is a lightweight, efficient, and flexible desktop operating system, designed to help you make the most of your computer. It’s an independent, portable and free project, aiming at being compatible with AmigaOS at the API level (like Wine, unlike UAE), while improving on it in many areas. The source code is available under an open source license, which allows anyone to freely improve upon it.
AROS Research Operating System is an open-source operating system developed since 1995. The project was created as a free implementation of AmigaOS for PCs, PowerPC, ARM and m68k. The original name of the Amiga Research Operating System was changed to AROS to avoid problems with Amiga brand licensing issues.
AROS base system files can be downloaded from the project website for various hardware architectures.
The files are compiled from the SVN repository and are available as NightBuilds.
The graphical interface of the Wanderer system is modeled on Workbench. Wanderer uses Zune – an object-oriented and free GUI creation system for the AROS operating system, which is a replacement for MUI.
