tvOS – a proprietary operating system for Apple TV devices.

The first version was released on May 30, 2007, as the operating system for the first Apple TV under the original name Apple TV Software and was based on Mac OS X Tiger until version 3. With version 4, the operating system was based on iOS, which in turn evolved from the iPhone OS and iPad OS and is also based on Mac OS X. In 2015, the operating system was renamed “tvOS” with version 9.

All of the aforementioned operating systems share the Darwin kernel, a BSD Unix with its own kernel.

Ancestry: Unix -> BSD -> NeXTStep/OPENSTEP -> Rhapsody -> macOS -> iOS -> Apple TV Software -> tvOS.
