Open-Xchange Server LiveCD – a live Linux distribution based on Knoppix, which is based on Debian, and which features pre-installed Open-Xchange Server.

Open-Xchange Server 5 is pre-installed on the top of Knoppix as a live CD. It works as a standard Open Xchange Server, however the running system ald all its data are temporary, existing only in RAM on the computer hosting the LiveCD.

You may use the Open Xchange Server to create users, to assign permissions, to access documents via the WEBDAV interface, to connect the Outlook OXtender, to use Web Mail, and to explore the Open Xchange Groupware.

Open-Xchange is software from Open-Xchange AG, a German company that is developed at the locations Olpe, Hamburg and Nuremberg and has offices in Paris, Madrid, Turin, Helsinki, The Hague and Palo Alto, USA.

Open-Xchange Server is open-source software that integrates an email client, calendar, contacts directory, and task management functionality. It also offers a simple mechanism for document workflow and sharing.

Open-Xchange Server supports free solutions as well as proprietary environments such as Apple iSync and Microsoft Outlook through commercial add-ons.

OX App Suite consists of a Java-based backend, a frontend based on HTML5 and JavaScript, and numerous external components.

The backend is modularly extensible and based on OSGi. Each module, comprised of several bundles, offers various APIs, from Java-level interfaces to a RESTful HTTP API, as well as specialized interfaces for specific applications, such as CalDAV for calendar functions. It’s important to note that the Open-Xchange Server cannot synchronize repetitive tasks via CalDAV.

The middleware is based on the open-source components OpenJDK, the MySQL database, and the Linux operating system. The backend functions as a single instance or in a cluster, does not include its own mail server, but integrates existing systems, such as Dovecot by default.

The frontend is an HTML5-based website and uses JavaScript for asynchronous requests via AJAX. It utilizes jQuery, underscore.js, and a require.js-based system for extensibility.

Alternatively, users can also use other clients such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook to access parts of the functionality of OX App Suite; the same applies to mobile devices.
