Nova – an operating system that uses the Linux kernel and includes certain software packages to meet the needs of the Migration to Open Source Platforms that Cuba goes through as part of the process of Computerization of the Society. It was being developed in Havana at the University of Information Science (UCI) by students and professors.

It is the recommended operating system to be used as the base technology for the deployment and development of computer applications in the State’s Central Administration Organisms. In this sense, the system has been installed on more than 100,000 computers assembled in the GEDEME factory, which are destined for national agencies and institutions.

The distribution is available in 3 versions:
– “Escritorio” with GNOME Shell
– “Ligero” with a Nova-developed lightweight desktop “Guano”
– “Servidor” for servers

The first version of Nova called Baire was based on Gentoo Linux, while Nova 2.1 Desktop Edition was based on Ubuntu.
