iPhone OS – a mobile operating system built on the Linux kernel.

iPhone combines three amazing products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone.

iPhone OS 1 is a mobile operating system and the first major release of iOS. iPhone OS 1.1.5 is the final version in the iPhone OS 1 series. This version of iOS was the first to include touchscreen features for mobile devices. No official name was given in the initial release. Apple’s marketing literature simply stated that the iPhone ran a version of Apple’s desktop operating system, macOS, then known as Mac OS X. On March 6, 2008, with the release of the iPhone software development kit (iPhone SDK), Apple renamed it “iPhone OS” (Apple later renamed it “iOS” on June 7, 2010, at the iPhone 4 unveiling.) It was replaced by iPhone OS 2 a year later, on July 11, 2008.

iPhone OS 2 is the second version of the now renamed iOS operating system from Apple Inc. It was superseded by iPhone OS 3 on June 17, 2009.

iPhone OS 3 is the third version of iOS, Apple’s mobile operating system. It was announced on March 17, 2009, and released on June 17, 2009. This was the last major version to be called iPhone OS before it was renamed iOS. iPhone OS 3 was followed by iOS 4 on June 21, 2010.

It was succeeded by iOS 4 in 2010, which abandoned the “iPhone OS” naming convention.
