ERPOSS – a Debian based Linux distribution released as the government desktop by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), which was developed in cooperation with Credativ GmbH from Jülich. The idea was to offer public administrations inexpensive and secure software solutions.

Debian GNU/Linux “Sarge” was expanded to include OpenOffice.org and KDE 3.3.2. The installation was greatly simplified and automatic hardware detection replaced manual editing of many configuration files.

Other desktops such as Gnome or WindowMaker were missing to make the distribution applicable for the easy setup of uniform PCs with a graphical user interface, web browser (Firefox) and OpenOffice.org office software.

Special features of the ERPOSS4 government desktop:
– Encryption of the file system (installation CD only)
– Pre-configured and activated personal firewall
– KMail email software with integrated virus and spam protection and encryption
– Pre-configuration to participate in the administrative PKI

System requirements of the ERPOSS3 government desktop:
– x86-compatible processor of the 486 generation or better
– At least 128 MB RAM
– Bootable CD-ROM drive
– Serial, PS/2 or USB mouse

The project was declared “outdated” by the BSI in 2008 and will no longer be continued.
