Toophpix – a modified Knoppix CDROM with some added content for dentists. It is intended to show how a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) server can be set up to help administer patient details.

This is limited to name and address details at present. One advantage of Knoppix is that by putting data into RAM users can modify data (i.e. run a database) even though the operating system is running from the CD.
The following instructions should help once the CDROM has booted up:-

Firstly, start the LAMP server by clicking the “StartLAMP” icon on your desktop. This icon should be clicked once only, and then you should wait for the beating of the icon to disappear and the Mozilla browser to appear. This may take up to a minute or so depending on the speed of your computer.

Once the browser appears it has many links to the dental files. These are located just below the Address bar. Many of the dental files and links below will not work as intended until this step is completed. If the icon is clicked more than once the database related applications won’t work.

Further files that might be useful for dentists can be found in the directory /var/www/Toophpix.
Clicking the “StartLAMP” icon (see above) should start the Apache server and put the MySQL database into RAM. Once this has run the Mozilla browser should open and you can start entering patient details.

If you have a USB storage device available you can save the details you have recorded to this device by clicking the “SaveToUSB” icon. You can also restore previously stored details from a USB device by clicking the “RestoreFromUSB” icon. If you have a floppy disk available you can save the details you have recorded to this device by clicking the “SaveToFloppy” icon. You can also restore previously stored details from a Floppy disk by clicking the “RestoreFromFloppy” icon.
