SOS (Sophisticated Operating System; Apple SOS) – the primary operating system developed for the Apple III.

SOS made the Apple III’s resources available in a manageable interface using System Utilities, as well as a programming API.

SOS was a single-tasking operating system. A single program loaded at boot time was called an interpreter. Once running, the interpreter could use the SOS API to make requests to the system. The SOS interface was divided into four main areas.

The Apple III System Utilities were included with every Apple III computer. System Utilities were menu-driven and performed tasks in three categories:
– Device Command Processor – copy, rename, format, check volumes (disks), list devices, set time and date.
– File Command Sheet Processor – copy, delete, rename files, create subdirectories, set file write protection, set prefixes (current working directory).
– System Configuration Program (SCP) – configure device drivers.

The Apple III (Apple ///) is a business-oriented personal computer produced by Apple Computer and released in 1980.
