Tiflobuntu – a GNU/Linux distribution which made easier for blind and visually impaired people.
With the goal of simplifying the use and configuration of GNU/Linux for blind and visually impaired people, tiflolinux.org (the group of blind and visually impaired GNU/Linux users) has created Tiflobuntu.
Tiflobuntu is a customized Ubuntu (Hardy Heron) distribution to make access to the GNU/Linux operating system easier for people with visual disabilities. Using the accessibility tools (technical aids) already available in Ubuntu, Tiflobuntu offers a configuration of them so that the user does not have to worry about learning or taking any additional steps to access the system.
With Tiflobuntu, it’s as easy as inserting the CD into the drive, turning on the computer, and after a few minutes you’ll have a voice and braille accessible desktop environment ready to work with.
Tiflobuntu offers the following features:
– Spanish language: Tiflobuntu’s default language is Spanish, with the option (if desired) to set it to English later.
– Accessible from the start: Tiflobuntu starts with support for speech synthesis and braille at boot time without the user having to worry about starting the technical aids manually.
– Latest versions of the technical aids. Tiflobuntu comes with the latest versions of Orca (the screen reader for the GNOME desktop), Yasr, a screen reader for the text console, Espeak speech synthesizer, GNOME speech systems (gnome-speech) and Speech dispatcher, BRLTTY access to the system through braille, Tesseract OCR application, Daisy DBR book reader.
– Accessible desktop applications: Tiflobuntu comes with Openoffice.org for creating documents and spreadsheets, Evolution email manager, Firefox 3.0 web browser, Transmission client for Bittorrent, Pidgin instant messenger for MSN, Yahoo, IRC Jabber, etc, Gwget download manager, gnome-mud client for playing muds, Rhythmbox music player with support for listening to mp3, ogg, wma, Totem movie player, Sound juicer CD sound extractor, sound recorder, mplayer for playing audio/video and DVD, Brasero CD burning program.
– Accessible system administration: Tiflobuntu is designed to make system administration as accessible as possible. You will be able to run applications as administrator and they will be accessible without having to touch anything.
– Accessible installation: You will be able to install Tiflobuntu on your computer in an accessible way, without having to configure anything else.
– Software updates: You can update your system when there are new Ubuntu updates, and Tiflobuntu also includes a repository of software packages maintained by the tiflolinux.org community with the latest versions of accessibility programs.
– Tiflobuntu is free and open source: The best thing is that you have the freedom to use Tiflobuntu and to modify and improve it, and it is free and you can make as many copies as you want to your friends.
