System 2 (also referred to as Macintosh System Software (versions 0.3 and 0.5)) – a proprietary graphical operating system released by the Apple company in 1985. It is the successor to System 1, released in 1984, it is the second in the line of classic Mac OS.
The most important change in this release is a significant increase in performance compared to the previous version. The Finder file manager received various improvements and bug fixes. The Put Back and Close All commands were removed, replaced by New Folder, Print Catalog, Use MiniFinder, and Shut Down. Dragging a disk icon to the trash bin deleted the disk.
Four months after its release in September of the same year, System 2 received a major update to version 2.1, which introduced support for the HFS file system and the Hard Disk 20 hard drive.
The System 2 successor is System 3.
