Mac OS 9 – a proprietary graphical operating system for Macintosh computers, released by Apple in 1999.

It is the final version of the classic Mac OS line. At its introduction, Mac OS 9 was announced to feature “50 new features,” including 128-bit encryption and Sherlock 2.

Mac OS 9, codenamed Sonata, was originally intended to be released as Mac OS 8.7. Many consider it the most feature-rich of the original Mac OS releases. While Mac OS 9 lacked modern operating system features such as memory protection and preemptive multitasking, recent improvements included the addition of an automatic Software Update engine and support for multiple users.

Apple marketed Mac OS 9 as the “best Internet operating system ever” and heavily promoted Sherlock 2, highlighting its built-in web search.

In addition to Sherlock and iTools, Mac OS 9 offered many other improvements over Mac OS 8:
– Control panel appearance improvements.
– A completely new sound control panel.
– An updated version of AppleScript.
– Keychain, a feature that allows users to save passwords in secure keychains.
– CD burning in Finder.

Mac OS 9 can be installed on any Macintosh that originally shipped with a PowerPC processor that has at least 32 megabytes of physical RAM and a minimum of 40 megabytes of logical RAM (virtual memory is set to 64 by default if there is less than 64 megabytes of physical RAM installed).

Mac OS 9 has been tested and qualified by Apple to run on Apple PowerPC-based Mac OS computers. (Mac OS 9 is not tested or qualified by Apple for use on Mac OS-compatible computers.)

For installation on 6100, 7100, and 8100 models, the computer must be booted from the Mac OS 9 installation CD.
