Mac OS 8 – an operating system released on July 26, 1997 by Apple Computer as the successor to System Software 7.

It is series of versions of the classic Mac OS that was used during the transition through major changes in the Macintosh hardware platform. Its earliest release still supported computers with Motorola 68040 processors; later releases (Mac OS 8.1 and 8.5) shipped with systems based on PowerPC G3 processors, such as the first iMacs and PowerMac G3s. It is associated with the second-generation PowerPCs that Apple sold at the time.

Mac OS 8.5 is the first version of the Mac OS to require a PowerPC processor.

Its successor is Mac OS 9, released in 1999.
