GS/OS – an operating system for the Apple IIGS computer, produced in 1988 to replace the ProDOS16 system previously used on this platform.
Unlike ProDOS16, adapted from previous models, GS/OS was written specifically for the Apple IIGS in the machine language of the W65C816 processor.
The system functionally corresponds to Mac OS systems of the era (version 5), offering the user a similar work environment (Finder), and the programmer a similar API. An important feature of GS/OS is the presence of a virtual file system, something rarely found in systems of this class at that time. The system retained compatibility with ProDOS16 applications.
It was the first true 16-bit operating system for the IIGS.
