Rockscluster (Rocks Cluster Distribution, originally NPACI Rocks) – a Linux distribution designed for high-performance cluster computing. It was initiated by the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure and SDSC in 2000, initially partially financed by the NSF grant (2000-2007).
Rocks was based on the Red Hat Linux distribution, however, the current Rocks versions are already based on CentOS with a modified Anaconda installer, which simplifies mass installation on multiple computers. Rocks contains many tools (eg MPI) that are not part of CentOS, but integral components that cluster a group of computers into a cluster.
Since its first release, Rocks has become a widely used cluster operating system for research, government and commercial organizations, used in 1,376 clusters around the world, on every continent.
