DesktopBSD – a desktop-oriented operating system based on FreeBSD.
The project started in 2005, and the first release candidate version was released 25 July 2005.
It provides a desktop operating system that is easy to use to the end users, but offers it with the power of BSD.

DesktopBSD is not a fork of FreeBSD, it uses the stable tree of FreeBSD and lets run it in Live mode, and install the system on a hard drive as well. DesktopBSD has pre-installed K Desktop Environment 3.5, which is the default graphical user interface and has its own utilities and configuration files for system management as well.

The last version of DesktopBSD was released in September 2009 and the development has been stopped.
The project has been restarted under new leadership in May 2010, but it stopped soon too.
In March 2013 the forums member announced that the project is restarted again, but there no fresh news any more.

In November 2015, the community members published a testing virtual image of DesktopBSD 2.0 M1.
The password to log in to the system is: dbsd

  1. @ the admin of archiveos.org – you might want to take a look at:

    sourceforge.net/projects/desktopbsd.desktopbsd.p/

it is (another?) DesktopBSD revival attempt, and their latest images are less than a year old.

  2. By the time you are finished releasing the stable version of DesktopBSD 2.0 RELEASE? It’s more than two years old from the last publication, and none of those iso images are useless.
